science π¬ Diamond melts under Neptune-like pressure, solving 20-year mystery
Scientists successfully crushed diamond beyond Neptune-like pressures to study its behavior under extreme conditions. Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) conducted the experiments using tiny diamond samples. These measurements were taken at temperatures hotter than the sun's surface and pressures exceeding those of Neptune and Uranus. The findings reconciled two long-standing discrepancies in diamond research with quantum mechanics simulations. This could help triple energy gain in inertial confinement fusion and improve planetary interior models. π¬
