Scientists developed a thorium-229-doped crystal at the Vienna Institute of Technology. This crystal provides the perfect site to build a nuclear clock up to 10 times more precise than current models. Researchers spent 15 years perfecting this crystal structure to house the thorium-229 atoms correctly. The fourth site within the crystal lattice proved ideal as it returned laser light at a single wavelength. The team anticipates this clock will improve precision by at least three orders of magnitude soon. ⚛️
