ποΈ CPI(M) opposes direct mayoral elections, backs BC quota
The CPI(M) has officially opposed the move for direct elections for mayors and chairpersons in the upcoming local body elections. State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao stated this would weaken the connection of corporators with the people in various bodies across the state. They welcomed the government's plan to give 34% reservation to Backward Classes (BCs) but demanded the 50% ceiling be lifted. Rao urged NDA allies to push the Centre for a necessary national constitutional amendment on this matter. He warned against rushing the reservation process just to meet Finance Commission grant deadlines. π§
