business ๐ข China opens Pinglu Canal to link south to SE Asia
China is launching the Pinglu Canal, its first modern river-to-sea waterway, to slash shipping distances to Southeast Asia. This 134km canal is located entirely in Guangxi, linking the Xijiang River with the Beibu Gulf. Authorities estimate it will cut shipping distance by about 560km and reduce logistics costs by 18 to 30 percent. The project is part of the larger Belt and Road Initiative, boosting trade between China and Southeast Asia. Commercial vessels will travel free of charge until December 31, 2026, before a nominal fee begins in 2027. ๐ข
