π¬ Centre cuts sugar dealer stock limit to fight price hikes
The Central government has halved the stock limit for sugar dealers to curb hoarding and rising retail prices. This change, effective from September 15 to November 30, applies across most of the country, though Kolkata retains the higher limit. The new rules restrict dealers to holding no more than 2,000 quintals for 30 days. This action follows a 37% jump in the all-India average retail price to Rs 63.28 per kg. The move happens despite a downward revision in the 2025-26 sugar production estimates. π
