science 🔭 Black Holes Turning Off: Fading Galaxies Uncovered 🌌
Astronomers found a new group of radio galaxies exhibiting fading radio lobes. This discovery was made by studying 14 candidates in the XMM–LSS field using MeerKAT and VLA. Twelve of these were confirmed remnants, fading over 8 to 42 million years, with an average fade age of 12 million years. This suggests astronomers might have missed a population of shorter-lived galaxy remnants. The research significantly advances the understanding of galaxy life cycles and black hole jet mechanics.
