๐ฆ Birds and crocodiles are actually close cousins ๐
Surprisingly, birds are the closest living relatives to crocodiles, both originating as archosauriforms about 250 million years ago. This evolutionary split led to two lineages, with a total of 500 million years of change separating them today. New research suggests early crocodiles were warm-blooded, evidenced by their four-chambered hearts. These fossils show both lineages maintained high metabolic rates until around 66 million years ago. Crocodiles likely reverted to cold-bloodedness to survive extinction events.
