Researchers from Harvard and Stanford genetically modified the marine bacterium Alteromonas macleodii to enhance carbon capture processes. These modified bacteria were tested in custom bioreactors to accelerate olivine weathering in seawater. The engineered strain managed to speed up olivine dissolution in seawater by 2.6-fold. This development suggests a significant leap in nature's ability to store atmospheric carbon dioxide.
