Antarctic microbes are surviving extreme conditions by sharing crucial survival genes among themselves. This gene swapping, known as horizontal gene transfer, was observed in nearly 98% of 676 microbe species studied. These genes often allow microbes to produce energy from atmospheric gases, a process called aerotrophy. This mechanism is vital in the harsh Antarctic soils where other resources are scarce.
