π Ancient black hole powerhouses found by Euclid
Scientists discovered 31 of the oldest quasars ever recorded, which are intensely luminous galactic cores. These were found by using the Euclid space telescope during its first 18 months of wide survey. The findings include two quasars dating back to when the Universe was only 670 million years old, as of the date of the discovery. This discovery doubles previous counts and challenges current theories on how supermassive black holes grew rapidly post-Big Bang. The team hopes Euclid will uncover hundreds more ancient quasars over its six-year mission.
