A study from Madrid, Spain, revealed that nitrogen dioxide (NO2) exposure during pregnancy links to different birth risks based on the trimester. The research analyzed 26,582 live singleton births using population register data from Madrid. Specific findings showed first-trimester exposure related to lower LBW risk, while third-trimester exposure was linked to higher prematurity and HBW risk. While poverty pockets exist in the wealthy region, the trimester-specific effects on birth outcomes were observed. Future studies are needed to fully test the potential live-birth bias suggested by the first-trimester findings.
