science 🔭 AI spots sunspots hours before they pop up ☀️
Researchers developed an AI model that can detect faint magnetic signals from sunspots forming deep inside the Sun. This system was created by a team at NJIT, Princeton University, and NASA’s Ames Research Center. The model was tested on 5 regions using data from 41 tracked regions over 110 hours. The 'EarlyDetect' version warned a median of 9.40 hours before the surface changed, averaging 4.73 hours early. Further testing on larger data sets and magnetic flux is planned for future improvements.
