π¬ Acetonitrile's Tri-Ion Gets a Major Structural Shake-Up
Researchers successfully imaged photoinduced isomerization in triply ionized acetonitrile using intense femtosecond IR laser pulses. The study was conducted by analyzing the acetonitrile tri-cation after it underwent isomerization but before fragmentation. Momentum imaging and native frame analysis revealed a clear triangular geometry signature during this process. This indicates that photoionization causes a structural shift from the linear canonical form, accompanied by hydrogen migration. Understanding this complex mechanism is relevant for both biology and industrial uses. π¬
